Back in 2005, University of Utah psychology professor David Strayer did a study which showed the effects of cell phone usage on 20-year-old drivers–it ages them. Their reaction times drop to those of 70-year-old drivers. Odds are good that other age groups show similar degradation of reaction times, as the study’s finding for people aged 65 to 74 demonstrate.

This helps to account for the commuter traffic snarl in major cities in the U.S. As reaction times slow, drivers are prone to take longer to regain speed after they brake (17 percent longer, according to the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society, which published Strayer’s study). In other words, drivers distracted by cell phone get in the way.

That is annoying, but that’s all it is. The real problem is when annoying becomes dangerous.

Cell phone distraction while driving kills over 2,500 people per year, and injures over 330,000. This is understandable.

Strayer’s previous work showed what cell phones do to the driver’s brain. When they are talking on the phone, even if it is a hands-free device, their brain is not really seeing what their eyes are looking at. That leaves them almost blind to traffic situations, surprisingly even worse than drunk drivers are.

Driving while talking on the phone is like putting on a blindfold and hoping for the best.

As soon as you throw a somewhat involved driving maneuver into the mix, like merging on the highway or passing on a two-lane road, you have a recipe for an accident.

Do you know the saying, “First impressions leave lasting impressions”? Well, similarly, driving for the first time is not something that you easily forget. When I first learned how to drive, I was out running errands with my mom. It was like any other day, except that when we were driving through the mall parking lot, she suddenly made a left turn into an abandoned section of the parking lot. She then stopped the car and turned the ignition off. Before I even asked what she was doing, I already knew. This was the part where she would get out of the car and turn the driver’s seat over to me. Sitting in her seat for the first time, I suddenly became aware of how incredibly nervous I was. She had a nice car, and I did not want to do anything to mess it up. Driving with my dad when I was still learning how to drive was no nearly as fun or exciting as driving with my mother had been. My dad was (and still is) notorious for having little to no patience whatsoever. As we were driving, I’ll never forget my father’s stiff posture as he sat reluctantly in the passenger seat, tenaciously clutching the door with what appeared to be a death grip as he repeatedly kept ordering me to “slow down”. “But, Dad!” I had exclaimed in frustration, “I’m only going 30 miles an hour!”

Needless to say, I didn’t go driving with my father that often. Later, after I had successfully acquired my driver’s license, I earned the nickname “lead foot” from my father. This was based on the fact that any time I would borrow his car to go hang out with friends, I would drive out of our neighborhood “too fast”.
